I’m updating my review because after much trial and error I finally found a light bulb that solves the glare issue. I got an indoor flood light - the kind you would buy for a ceiling can light. This works because the neck of the bulb is long and almost opaque, so no glare comes out the cut-out on top, and instead of a round bulb the flood light has a flat surface which diffuses the light so when you are directly under the light there is no glare. Very happy that I found this solution; if you are sensitive to glare give this a try.This is a beautiful light, really good value for the money, our electrician installed it quickly, well-made, clean lines. A few other reviews mentioned that the cord would not straighten out but ours straightened out within a day. But I wish I had paid more attention to the the cut-out in the top of the light - it’s not super obvious from most of the photos but quite a bit of light shines out from that cut-out and for me the glare from it is annoying. (We installed two of these over our dining table, with 60-watt bulbs -even partially dimmed the glare is noticeable when you are standing or sitting across the room.) I’ve ordered a couple of bulb extenders so the bulbs will hang lower and am using bulbs that are opaque at the top so hopefully the combo will solve the problem. But I wish I had bought a barn light without the cut-outs at the top. Just food for thought.

The light fit my needs perfectly and I am very pleased with the look and performance. I recently finished my basement to a Rustic Industrial theme and spent tons of time researching lights go place over my bar area. To be completely honest I bought these lights because of the very reasonable price with full intentions of changing them out to "fancier, more expensive" lights. Once I installed the lights and turned them on I could not be more pleased with them and feel I received an excellent deal. One feature I really like is the open slots at the top of the light that allows some light to flood up onto the ceiling so I don't have a dark tunnel look. I have old "Edison Style" bulbs in the fixtures and again could not be more pleased with the purchase and they will stay up for a very long time. True the $320.00 per fixture that I originally wanted had more eye popping polished copper accent "bling" but I simply could not justify the cost for the difference. For my application this is absolutely the best fit I could hope for. If I had any complaints it would be that the cord was tightly wound up for shipping and it did take a little bit of time to lay out and required some gentle "encouragement" to straighten out (the lamp itself is very light and I had concerns it would straighten out the cord itself). All in all very happy.

Very pleased with this fixture. Looks very nice, the inside of the pendant is white, so that helps to cast more light downward. I do use a spiral bulb, which is 150 watt equvilant. The top of the bulb shows where the openings are at the top. Not the prettiest sight but how many people actually look up at a pendant. This particular pendant does have a grounding wire, which some of the other hanging pendants do not have. Easily cut to the length that you need but do be aware that you must know how to wire it back. The canopy is a tad bit smaller than I would've assumed based on the size of the pendant itself. But a canopy can be bought rather cheaply if you need a larger one. And at this price, you can't go wrong purchasing this light. I bought just one but will be purchasing another to go over my large kitchen island. The 2 will provide plenty of light for a 9' island, even if you use a 100 watt equivilant spiral bulb.

These lights have some heft - the shade is about twice as substantial as I was expecting. The overall impression is of simple, timeless quality. While we haven't installed these yet (we're in the middle of a kitchen/dining room renovation), I am certain that they will look perfect with our "farmhouse-meets-IKEA" style: natural alder wood Shaker-style cabinets, stainless fridge and stove, black dishwasher, and painted wood floor (burnt orange). Also, I don't understand the reviewer who disliked the edge between the black and white because it has a spray-painted "dotted" appearance. To me, that blends the colors much better than would a hard straight line.Jan 19, 2017 update: We installed 7 of these in our remodeled kitchen last summer, and we LOVE them. I can not recommend them highly enough. In fact, I'm back on this page to purchase another one.

I bought a pair of these for my new kitchen and while I love the way they look, they are definitely a case of form over function. I have quite a lot of recessed lighting in my kitchen which allows for these to be purely decorative, and they work beautifully for me for that purpose.However, anyone considering purchasing this light should be aware that 60wt Edison bulbs, which look completely awesome in these fixtures, do not give off as much light as regular incandescent 60wt bulbs. The lumen output is noticeably lower and not suitable for task lighting, even with the highly reflective quality of the white enamel coating on the interior of the fixture interior. 60wt bulbs of other types will be brighter, but not look nearly as cool. It's a trade-off.Still, the design is very attractive. The cut-outs around the top allow the light to shine through there as well as out of the bottom. It's a really great look. You can see the light that is cast upward in the attached photo. There are plenty of less stylish lights out there for far more money. I could not be happier with them.
